Our friends, looking to create a flagship to their new coffee and café brand, approached us to collaborated in establishing and creating their vision. An unusual space in an ideal location—they chose a spot in a triangular building right at the crosshairs of Houston and Lafayette, in-between Soho and Noho. The project is essential about clarity in space, materials and service—and bringing some Brooklyn vibe to downtown Manhattan. Diving the space into two distint areas—customer service—we created a clear alley between the doors utilizing a raised service counter and a datum line of glossed OSB along the walls. As a counterpoint to the OSB, the service counter—while simple in shape—was enhanced with large shingled walnut and a copper counter that will patina over time. The counter also sits strategically in the space, carving out a proficient customer bar area at both steel facade exposures, operable at this datum where it can open up to the street life.
